INTERNATIONAL INSTITUTE FOR THE STUDY OF NOMADIC CIVILIZATIONS

Following the proclamation of Mongolian folk long song in the Representative List and Oral Traditions of the Intangible Heritage of Humanity of UNESCO,  the International Institute for the Study of Nomadic Civilizations (IISNC) initiated and conducted the ‘Study of Traditional Heritage and Singing Proficiency of Long Song" in cooperation with foreign researchers and scholars during 2008-2013. Within the scope of the project, field expeditions in 8 different regions and rural areas traveled a distance of 40 000 km, conducted long song study among Mongol ethnic groups living in the territories of Mongolia, Russia and China, met and made documentations of over 300 heritage bearers, which became the fundamental study to identify the current condition and critical issues in preservation of long song and established the database of audio and video resources. This project has been continued until present, where the total distance of field expeditions reached 60.000km, interviewed over 600 long song singers - long song heritage bearers aged 12-90, made video documentations of over 300 hours and recorded about 800 long songs and variant melodies in duplicated number.
